Do You Know What Really Happens in a Coaching Session?

A powerful coaching session doesn’t give you the answers. It helps you discover the questions you can no longer avoid.

Have you ever wondered what actually happens when you sit across from a coach? What do we talk about? What are the benefits? What can you discover?

And perhaps more importantly: what could be different when you walk out of the room?

Coaching is not sitting in front of someone who tells you what to do.

Sometimes you enter a session talking about:

  • A difficult decision.
  • A leadership challenge.
  • A career transition.
  • A conflict.
  • A goal you haven’t achieved.
  • A behavior you want to change.
  • A feeling that something is simply no longer working.

And then…

The questions begin

  • What do you really want?
  • What is stopping you?
  • What are you tolerating?
  • What are you avoiding?
  • What assumption are you making?
  • What pattern keeps repeating?
  • What are you afraid might happen?
  • What is staying exactly where you are costing you?
  • What part of this situation is within your control?
  • What would you choose if fear wasn’t making the decision?
  • Who do you need to become to create the outcome you want?
  • What are you pretending not to know?

And then, silence

Because sometimes a powerful question shouldn’t be answered quickly.

You stop. You think. You feel.

You connect dots you hadn’t connected before.

And you may begin to recognize:

  • Blind spots.
  • Limiting beliefs.
  • Contradictions.
  • Repeated behaviors.
  • Emotional triggers.
  • Unchallenged assumptions.
  • Possibilities you couldn’t see from inside the problem.

That’s where perspective begins to shift.

Now what?

Coaching shouldn’t end with an interesting realization. Eventually comes another question:

  • What will you do differently?
  • What will you stop doing?
  • What decision needs to be made?
  • What conversation needs to happen?
  • What is your first step?
  • When will you do it?

Awareness translated into intentional action is where transformation can begin.

Possible outcomes

Depending on the person, the objective and the process, some outcomes include:

  • Greater self-awareness.
  • Clarity and perspective.
  • Stronger decision-making.
  • Recognition of blind spots.
  • Behavioral change.
  • Increased accountability.
  • More intentional leadership.
  • Concrete actions toward meaningful goals.

A coach doesn’t live your life for you. Doesn’t make your decisions. And shouldn’t create dependency.

The objective is quite the opposite: to strengthen your ability to observe yourself, question yourself, understand yourself, decide, act and ultimately lead yourself.

Now that you know what coaching is: what do you already know needs to change in your life, career or leadership, but you still haven’t acted on?

You can book a discovery session to explore it.
